General information
The Phuket on main roads are generally in good condition and road signs in both Thai and English. If you are driving in the south of Phuket in Thailand outside, you will notice most of the signs are in Thai only.
The main road between the north (the airport) and the town of Phuket have been improved during the last 1-2 years and has now been completed.

In case you do not know, you are in Thailand DRIVE ON THE LEFT SIDE!

If you plan to rent a motorbike or a car, do not forget to acquire an international driving permit in your country before arriving in Thailand.

The police in Patong only enforce the law and have a helmet control at the corner Bangla road and Rat-u-thit road almost every day between 17:00 and 20:00, but in recent months they have often been at the beach and the road Sawatdirak Route during the day which makes it difficult to know when they will appear. For this reason, many people and taxi drivers started to wear helmets all the time.

Outside Patong, Phuket Town Kathu and enforce police also driving licence and only a law-Thai or international driving permit is valid in Thailand.

The fine is 200-600 baht according to the district police office and what you break the rules. (Patong, most often they charge 300 baht for not wearing a helmet.)

Motorcycles
PHUKET motorbikeMotorbikes rents are the most common transport on the island and the easiest and cheapest way to get around. Swedish travel agencies recommend tourists NOT TO LET A VEHICLE because of the many accidents on Phuket each year, and also, there is noassurance at your disposal for any rental motorcycle.

My recommendation is RENT if you feel safe and comfortable with a motorcycle and traffic in Thailand. I think that's the best way to travel and explore by yourself Phuket without spending too much money. Phuket is ideal for cruising with a motorcycle, but by car SAFE and be aware of vehicles that can turn left or right without using the blinkers and do not trust the lights, look yourself.

The rental fee is usually 120-150 baht per day in low season and 150-250 baht in the high season for a motorcycle. For a big bike, the rental costs may be 400-800 baht per day.

Car

PHUKET car The lease rental fee is normally 900 baht / day for a small Suzuki jeep, weekly if you rent you can get lower prices. I think renting a car is a good option for small groups or if you plan to travel long distances. There is insurance available, but be sure to read the fine prints.

Motorcycle taxi
Drivers of motorcycles are generally dressed in a green or orange vests and are available for a short trip by taxi service. Just a vague at the stop and ask the price of your destination. The price is normally 20 baht.

Tuk-Tuk (Taxi)
PHUKET tuk tuk taxi They become expensive in recent years, and they charge you more than most of the time. Not long ago you could pay 10 or 15 baht for a short trip in Patong, nowadays, they may want to charge 40-50 baht for each person. I do not know exactly what the normal rate between Patong and Phuket Town would be, but we have paid 300 baht last time (in March 2000). The standard rate between Patong and Karon beach should be 200/250 baht.
If you want to look around the island, you can hire a driver for a half-day or full day and negotiate a good price, usually around 400-800 baht. But be aware of what he can take you to places that pay commissions when they ask around show. You better use other resources, and to say exactly where you want to go and what you want to see.

Songthaew (bus)
PHUKET bus transportThese buses day (7:00 - 17:00), and between the beaches of Phuket Town and the cost 10-30 baht. However, these buses do not travel from beach to beach, instead, you must first go to Phuket Town, then switch to a bus to your final destination. To stop a songthaew in the street, you should wave with your hand or wait for the bus at one of the stops (huts) along the road.

To / from the airport
There is a minibus (taxi), and a limousine service at the airport from the airport and most hotels also have a minibus for this service. The normal rate of the airport by limousine from the airport to the city of Phuket is 360 baht, Patong beach 480 baht (540 baht if your destination is Nanai along the route), Karon Beach and 540 baht. If you chose minibus would be the normal rate of 150 to 200 baht.

Free pick-up with minibus
If you purchase tickets in advance for some events / TOURS (Fantasea, Simon Cabaret, diving excursions), the transport service to / from your hotel is included free.

Longtail boats and personal watercrafts
Longtails are available on most beaches, and are used to provide a number of maritime services While not as fast a boat modern travel in a longtail boat is an interesting experience and a great way to take trips. Rental prices on average 400 baht per hour for short trips and up to 1200 baht for a round trip to a nearby beach.
Some beaches also offer speedboat taxi, I do not know their fares, thinking.
